And worse still, we actually elected them! (Twice!)
So by now we’ve all heard about VP Dick Cheney “accidentally” shooting a 78-year-old fellow hunter in the face while Quail hunting. We’ve even heard all of the jokes revolving around the incident of Cheney “accidentally” shooting a 78-year-old fellow hunter in the face while Quail hunting. Heck, some of us have even played the Dick Cheney Quail hunting game on Arianna Huffington’s Web site.
>But did you know what Dick Cheney considers hunting? Apparently, it is good to be the VP, because unlike most of his fellow hunters across America, Mr. Cheney didn’t actually have to spend hours or even days tramping through the muddy fields and hedgerows of Texas in hopes of bagging a brace of birds for the dinner table. Nope, he drove up in his air-conditioned limo, with his Secret Sever ice protection and political entourage stepped out to the side of the road, and had the gamekeepers simply release the pen-raised, fist-sized birds to their awaiting slaughter.
Consider this report about an earlier hunt the VP participated in Pennsylvania back in December of 2003.
Upon his arrival at the exclusive Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township, gamekeepers released 500 pen-raised pheasants from nets for the benefit of him and his party. In a blaze of gunfire, the group—which included legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach and U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), along with major fundraisers for Republican candidates—killed at least 417 of the birds. According to one gamekeeper who spoke to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cheney was credited with shooting more than 70 of the pen-reared fowl.
You can read the rest of that report here.
Yep, that’s right, not only does the VP believe that he doesn’t need a warrant to listen to you phone, but he doesn’t feel it necessary that he actually have a hunting license either (he didn’t have one when he shot a 78-year-old fellow hunter in the face). Not only does he think it is OK to shoot caged “game” (does the term “shooting fish in a barrel” have a familiar ring here?) but it is also fine to send our boys overseas (without the proper equipment, body and vehicle armor).
Is it just me, or is anyone else starting to see a pattern here? Seriously folks, it is this sort of “Do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do, the-rules-I-make-don’t-apply-to-me-or-my-wealthy-friends” attitude that is ruining this country. We need to start now and actively start campaigning to get these monsters out of office, and get back to a country that really is by and for the people.
