Have yourself a Funnybook weekend

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

con-girl_1So, as you all know, I saw Wolverine at 12:01 Friday morning, then spent Saturday celebrating Free Comicbook Day, and seeing Wolverine for a second time (Hey, did you know that there are multiple codas tacked on at the end of the film, and you don’t know which one you are going to get until the very end of the credits? How cool is that? Plus, the film is still way better a film that Walt gives it credit for being, yeah, there are some shortcomings with it, and I’ll get to those in another post, but it still is a fun film, and both crowds I saw it with seemed to enjoy it.)

Well, in addition to the above, I received a packet of comics from Teshkeel Publishers who produced the wonderful Islamic-themed superhero comic The 99, A pair of comics (Celtic Knights) from my Facebook Buddy from Ireland (Stephen Paul Coffey, and a comp copy of Beyond the Kuieper Belt (Free Lunch Comics) as I had contributed a fake “letter of comment” to the premiere issue.

con-girl_2I also got to spend a good portion of the day with several funnybook friends as well as my nephew, who also enjoys comics, and, well stuff like that needs to be nurtured, as there aren’t enough of us funnybook fans around these days, especially of the younger generation. Oh yeah, I also grabbed up a bunch of giveaway Marvel comics that are being included in the Kid’s Meals over at Taco Bell.

As I checked my list of FCBD Comics, it seems that there were only 12 that I missed grabbing up, of those dozen, there is only one, Love and Capes, that I missed getting. Turns out one shop I was at didn’t order the comic, and the other ordered, it, but by the time I got there, it was gone. Seems that Sarge’s in New London, CT puts on a big show. He invites local creators, alerts the media, and then purchases a bunch of pizzas to hand out for free to patrons. As it turns out, there was also a Girl Scout Troop out front selling cupcakes and cookies, as well as numerous patrons who showed up in costume.

This stuff just never gets old.

See you in the funnypapers!fcbd_date_wide

As you all know this is funnybook geeks Festivus. So I’m going to celebrate bigtime.

I’m going to start my day at A Timeless Journey in Stamford, CT this morning and then I’m heading over to Sarge’s in New London CT. I’ll be traveling with my good friends John A. Wilcox and Rusty Haller, as well as my nephew Tony-o.

Have fun out there folks!

Funnybook Films in your Future

rock \'em sock \'em indeedWith the funnybook red&gold/green “One-Two” punch of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk knocking on the Summer blockbuster door to kick off the Summer season, I just wanted to look down the road a bit to see what we can expect for the rest of the funnybook year to come, because, unlike this guy, I’m actually looking forward to this year’s slate of funnybook films.

First of all, June is going to be rounded out by Wanted (which began life as a creator-owned comicbook mini-series, by Mark Millar and J. G. Jones which was published by Top Cow in 2003–‘04. This one is an action-packed adventure staring Angelina Jolie as a killer assassin who is schooling a young man James McAvoy in the art of the kill. The trailers look very cool (but then again so did those of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and we all know how that one turned out, eh?).

Up next month we have Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Batman: The Dark Knight, both of which also look good. Batman, as you all know is a character from the DC stable of heroes, but you might not know that Hellboy hails from Dark Horse an upstart Left Coast comicbook company that has found it niche in successfully linking up with a number of Hollywood Studios (either by adapting their movies to comics (Aliens, Terminator), or by having characters that began life in their comics go the other way and make the jump into movies (Barb Wire, The 300, Sin City). Much has already been written about this Batman Returns follow-up and the unfortunate and tragic death of Heath Ledger. From what I’ve seen of the trailers and how spectacular the previous film was, this one is going to be the one to beat this Summer.

whiteoutFurther out we can expect Punisher: War Zone this December, and (from what we’ve heard) this one will be better than either The Thomas Jane/John Travolta film or the original Dolph Lundgren version. Again, I’m holding judgment on this one until I see some more. Also scheduled for a December release is the Film Whiteout, Based on the comicbook. Whiteout follows U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko as she uncovers the first murder ever in the Antarctic just as the sun is about to set for six months. She must catch the killer before he leaves the ice or be stuck there with him in the dark for six months. I read one installment of this comic (I think it was something I got on Free Comicbook Day) and it read real well. Glad to see it is being made into a film.

There actually might be more, but this is what I know of right now.

Oh yeah, I’m formally issuing a “WTF” Alert for our Imperious Leader.
