Non-whites need not apply

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

We are — for better or worse — a nation of immigrants. No, it's true, unless you are a Native American (and probably not even then, to be sure), you or your ancestors came to this country from someplace else (either willing or forced), so I'm constantly baffled by folks who want to "send 'em back to where they came from."

It is for that reason that the Arizona law (and measures like it), scare me. Then, there is this...

Eduardo Caraballo, a U.S. citizen born in the United States, was detained for over three days on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.

Despite presenting identifying documents and even his birth certificate, Caraballo was held by federal immigration authorities over the weekend and threatened with deportation, according to an NBC Chicago report. He was only released when his congressman, Luis Gutierrez -- a vocal supporter of immigration reform -- intervened on his behalf.

I need someone to explain to me why this is a good idea. Please speak slowly and use small words.

Justice for Money!

Last week, Stephen Colbert went on a rant about the State of Arizona’s plan to privitize the State’s prison system by selling off nine of it’s 10 prisons, and then leasing them back from the new owners.

Yep, while that may sound preposterous to, well rational people, apparent the very notion of Arizona selling its prisons then leasing them back from the buyer to solve short-term cash flow problems somehow sounds like a great idea to the elected government officials in Arizona.

Here, is Colbert’s take on the whole situation:
